Zoom Doom: How To Go From Exponential Growth to Shrink In A Matter of Weeks

Hey TCH-Family,

Today we’re going to talk about the popular video-chat service Zoom and why you may want to look for another service. As more companies are working remotely and people are encouraged to practice social distancing, video-chat services had to adapt to meet demand and Zoom rose to the top.

By downloading the Zoom app, users can easily create a video-chat code and anyone with an account can join by entering the code into the app. Zoom allows up to 100 participants to join for a 40-minute call in the free version or up to 500 participants in a paid plan. With the massive video-chat sizes Zoom quickly became the most popular video-chat service for businesses and schools making the switch to remote work. Along with professional users, Zoom attracted a lot of users looking to socialize with friends and family while staying indoors. With its user-friendly setup and the ability to change video-chat backgrounds leading to endless memes going around right now, Zoom fit the needs of both professional and social users. Zoom has said its platform grew from 10 million users in December of 2019 to 200 million users in March of this year. Despite its massive user base it’s proven to be far from the best video-chat option.

With that immense amount of growth in such a short period of time Zoom quickly became a security target. On top of being less than truthful about having end-to-end encryption to their users, multiple security vulnerabilities have been found in the Zoom app. From leaking its user’s windows credentials and sharing user data with Facebook, the list of security threats grows more each day. Users are quickly leaving Zoom for other options as more information about these security threats comes out. New York City has even banned Zoom from being used by its school system along with countless companies like SpaceX and NASA banning their employees from downloading the app.

As video-chat services become more and more necessary in daily life we’re interested in what’s to come from Zoom’s growing list of blunders and who will take their place. Whether it’s for work or socializing let us know what video-chat service you’ve been using lately.

Smartphones and Their Many Cameras

Hey TCH-Family,

We’re back to talk about mobile phones again. This time about some cool things that come with smartphones filling up with multiple cameras.

Having more than one camera on the back of a smartphone has been around for a few years. Nokia even released the Nokia 9 at the beginning of 2019 with 5 12mp cameras on the back. Since the iPhone 11 Pro started sporting 3 cameras in the fall of 2019, multiple cameras are becoming more and more common on smartphone models. At face value having 3 cameras on you at all times is really cool. With an ultra-wide angle, wide angle, and telephoto lens on your phone it feels like the modern version of a Bolex H16, a crank-powered film camera with 3 lenses on the front.

Apart from having different lenses to choose from, the most common use for multiple smartphone cameras is cleaner images. With multiple sensors, smartphones gather more image data. Using the extra data they are able to blend images to get better low light performance, improve color accuracy and create images that are sharper with less noise.

What we’re excited about here at TCH is how more image data will affect Augmented Reality or AR in smartphones. When most people think of AR they think of Snapchat or Instagram filters. However there are more and more apps coming out every day that use AR to improve daily tasks. From Google Maps AR that allows users to point their camera ahead of them and creates giant floating arrows directing them around street corners, to American Airlines testing an AR app that directs users through busy terminals. We’re excited to see what’s to come as AR becomes a more common feature in apps, and the trend of multiple camera smartphones continues feeding apps more data to work with than ever before. Whether it’s for work or for leisure there are tons of possibilities to further bring AR into daily life.

AI in TV’s and Monitors!

Hey TCH-Family,

We’re going to mix it up again and talk about TV’s, or high-end computer monitors if you have the budget for it.

LG recently announced shipping windows for its new OLED TV’s starting in the spring of 2020, and they’ve been paying attention to PC gamers.

At the lowest end of their models, and starting at $1,500, the 48-inch CX series is aimed at gamers. Despite technically being a TV it hits the mark to double as a gaming monitor. The 4k lineup has a 240hz refresh rate. Not only do high refresh rates look good during gaming, they also prevent screen tearing. This model includes LG’s Alpha 9 Gen 3 AI processor and has Nvidia G-sync compatibility. The Alpha 9 Gen 3 AI processor uses machine learning to detect the type of content being played. While doing so, it’s capable of adjusting pixels and audio quality to what LG thinks would best fit the genre of the game being played.

Even with the ability to optimize playback and meeting the base specs most PC gamers look for, $1,500 is a pretty steep price. We’re not sure gamers are going to jump at the opportunity to spend this much cash. Especially with the fact that OLED screens are more susceptible to burn-in than other options. Though it is cool to see how LG is trying to change the gaming world with AI and machine learning. If money isn’t a problem, LG has other options that only go up from there. With 55-inch and 65-inch options being the middle ground of the new line up and the 77-inch GX 4k OLED TV for $6,000 at the top of their 4k line. They’re also releasing the ZX series as their 8k options with a 77-inch and 88-inch model. There’s no set price for the ZX series yet, but they’re sure to be more expensive than last year’s 8k Z9 selling between $19,999 and $29,999.

No one here at TCH is planning on spending that much money on a tv made to double as a computer monitor, but we’re curious to see how consumers react. If there are cheaper options down the road, some of our staff is curious to see how much AI and machine learning will change their gaming routine.
